I'm a big believer in "everything happens for a reason." When I launched my "New Year, Fresh Space" campaign during the beginning of the year, I had no idea how relevant it would be to my own life.

After listening to my heart and the whispers in my head, I have relocated from California back home to New York. The response to move back to the East Coast has been overwhelming. Home is where the heart is, and New York will always be that special place for me.

Northern California is unlike any other place in the world and I wouldn't change spending the past two years out there for anything -- the people I met, the experiences I had and the inspiration I took with me have changed my outlook on my life and my work more than I could have imagined.

This relocation has invigorated me to start achieving some of my life goals. It has always been a dream of mine to venture into retail; a place where I can combine my love for display and styling, a reason to continue the hunt for unique pieces, and a place where I can sell my handmade jewelry line.

With that being said, I'm excited to announce that as of Friday, my retail business, Telesca, is now officially open inside the Hyde Park Antique Center located in the Hudson Valley, New York.

Telesca is a combination of Antique, Vintage, Found and Re-purposed pieces. I'm calling my look "Industrial Shabby Chic with a Bohemian, European edge" (or something like that!). For those of you familiar with the West Coast aesthetics, you can see the influence California had one my style.

I am joining forces with a well know antique picker, Mary Ellen Dean of Fiddlehead Farm, who is helping me source some absolutely amazing pieces including a rare Antique Large Birdcage and a beautiful white Fireside Chair. She has an amazing eye and some very well known clients (including Martha Stewart).

I'm taking this venture step-by-step -- I will eventually list pieces on my Etsy site for purchase and my handmade jewelry will be for sale in the booth as soon as I find a lockable case. And I hope to one day turn this into a stand-alone, brick-and-mortar boutique.

The Hyde Park Antique Center is a 50-dealer emporium just steps away from Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Library, the Culinary Institute of America, and my hometown of Rhinebeck, NY. It's a known source with many designers and tastemakers including another local stylist, Eddie Ross, who did a great review of the treasures he found here.

flea markets in paris

Did you watch? Are you drooling yet? Well, I am! Spending a morning trolling a french flea market is as good as it gets; croissant in hand, Euros in pocket and treasures to uncover.

When I came across this video of the Porte de Vanves flea market in Paris, it reminded me of a trip I took to France a few years ago and all the amazing pieces I found there. This market in particular is one not to be missed. The only problem? Many of the dealers were older and didn't speak English very well... but this actually may have worked out in my favor or I probably would have brought the whole market back to New York!

sheep and snow

Did you see the Shear Beauty story in this month's Martha Stewart Living? I can't get enough of the stunning photography, the country landscape and the winter scenes.

It was shot at Morehouse Farm in Milan, NY which neighbors my hometown Rhinebeck NY. I used to wake up to frosty mornings like the winter wonderland captured in this story, and who can forget the Hudson Valley's annual Barn Tour? Some of the images I captured almost mimicked the ones here with the flocks of sheep and rolling hills.

We have a dear family friend, Mel Dean, who owns Fiddlehead Farm in Rhinebeck and this reminds me of being on her farm with the sheep and relishing in the beauty of nature (...her other business is sourcing beautiful antiques and one piece was featured recently on The Martha Stewart Show!)

One of the most beautiful parts of this story was Christopher Baker's video of the sheep walking peacefully through the snow and the calmness of the frozen terrain. I've been watching it over and over and over...

I've been going through some old work of mine and came across this series I did of backs in beautiful Lela Rose wedding dresses -- it was Lela's first time showcasing her bridal line about 6 years ago, and as I was snapping away her adorable little dog was watching by my feet. Aren't the details on these dresses divine? Although I'm concentrating more on interiors and less on fashion these days, it's nice to re-visit these old friends.

apartment project, searching for a farmhouse table

This weekend, my Man and I are headed to Alameda in search of one thing and one thing only; a farm table for our dining room. I can't think of a better way to ring in the New Year; a flea market, cash in hand, a large truck (think of the possibilities!) and my very sweet and willing Boyfriend!

I've been dreaming of a big, rustic table with meaty legs and a lot of soul... you know, the kind that gets better with age? (wait, am I talking about a table or a man here...?). I'm drawn to the easy elegance of a piece like this -- coffee rings, wine spills and dings and dents only enhance its appeal.

I see it juxtaposed with either industrial metal or sleek modern chairs, a large glass vase, pillar candles, some stacked white plates and a set of washed linen napkins. It's putting my stylist brain in overload!

Hopefully I'll have a great 'Thrifting Thursday's' post next week! Is anyone else on the hunt for treasures this weekend?

vintage ornaments

One of my favorite parts about Christmas is getting out my collection of vintage ornaments -- there's something about the old glitter, the tarnished glass, the patina and the funky color combinations that makes me smile year after year. I carefully unpack each piece from Styrofoam-popcorn-packed bins and fill large bowls with the colored bulbs. I set aside all the silver and gold ones for the tree.

My collection ranges from 1940's transparent glass bulbs (when all metal went towards the war) to 1950's Shiny Brite's (a major American manufacturer) to 1960's psychedelic shapes and designs. I love seeing how history effects how we decorate for the Holiday's and I love owning a tiny part of American Christmas heritage.

It's so hard for me to pass up vintage bulbs when I come across them at flea markets and thrift stores, and because of this, I've become a bit of an ornament-hoarder... and I'll be the first one to admit it; Hello, I'm Meagan and I'm a vintage-ornament-hoarder.

My collection has gotten so big over the past few years that I've been pairing down, and this year, I brought a selection in to Nestware in Davis, California. If you're in the area, stop in and say hello -- they make great gift toppers or pick out a few gems for your own collection!

I'm spending Thanksgiving with my family in my hometown of Rhinebeck, NY. Old wooden barns, stone walls and rolling hillsides are rising up to greet me on this cold and blustery day. I'm thankful to be in such a beautiful setting with my family and friends. As I get older, it's the little things that fill me with gratitude.

farmhouse project, a peek inside

The past 4 1/2 months have been a whirlwind for my client Emarie and her husband Nick -- After purchasing their dream home in July, then undertaking the grueling task of renovation and restoring a circa 1870's Victorian Farmhouse into a livable and modern home, they're finally moving in this weekend and I couldn't be more excited for them!

Not all the rooms are complete (the Kitchen, the two Bathrooms and the Master Bedroom are still under construction), but before any of the decorating begins, I thought I'd give you a mini tour and show some of the progress that's been made so far.

FRONT OF HOUSE: Don't you just love all the original millwork? We have plans to paint the front door, add new house numbers, lighting, a couple of urns, and amp-up the landscaping. In the last 'Farmhouse Project' post, we quickly dressed it up for Fall.

Emaire and Nick are fortunate to be working with a home that has some great bones and architectural details; thick woodwork, large windows, a built-in hutch with original brass bin pulls, a gorgeous fireplace, a large side porch and an expansive front lawn.

Of course with any major project like this one, Emarie and Nick had their fair share of challenges. The kitchen and back bedroom were added on in the 1950's, sadly much of the decorating was from that era too (think bad carpeting and light fixtures), and the original homeowners left behind a few pieces of furniture that you'll see in some of the photos (although we have plans to revamp them and integrate them into the decorating).

FRONT BEDROOM: The walls have been painted Benjamin Moore's Morning Dew and the floors have been refinished. This will be turned into an office/study. We're thinking a doing a collage wall and adding some cool mid-century pieces.

LIVING ROOM: All the carpet and window treatments have been removed, the walls have been painted Benjamin Moore's Tapestry Beige and the floors stained dark. We'll be looking for a large sofa, an area rug, lighting etc...

SITTING ROOM: The walls have also been painted Benjamin Moore's Tapestry Beige and the floors given a dark stain. This room sits between the Living Room and the Dining Room, hence "Siting Room", and we see it as the perfect spot for pre-dinner chatter and post-dinner drinks. It has a beautiful mantle and we're thinking of flanking it with two cozy wing-backs with a great side table with some statement art.

DINING ROOM: The walls have also been painted Benjamin Moore's Tapestry Beige and the floors stained dark. This is a room that will shirley be filled with this couple's large extensive family, can you believe their hosting Thanksgiving in a few weeks? We'd better get to work!

KITCHEN: This room is at the back of the house and was added on during the 1950's. Although the sink and retro details are charming, they've since been removed and the space is now in the process of being turned into a working and "modern-farmhouse" kitchen that will have open shelving, butcher block counters and a Wolfe stove.

MASTER BATHROOM: The pink has all been ripped out and is in the process of being turned into a white and classic space with some farmhouse touches.

MASTER BEDROOM: This room sits at the back of the house near the kitchen and right now is being used as storage. It will eventually get new paint and the floors will be refinished.

thrifting thursday's meets apartment project

A few weekends ago marked the end of yard-sale-season here in Northern California (with 80 degree weather we were still having meant we could push it well into October!). I tweeted about my finds HERE; an aluminum plate for free (I'll stick it under a plant) and a vintage brass school house light fixture for $2.50 (they wanted $5.00 which was still a good price, but I think bartering at yard sales is part of the game, wouldn't you agree?)

I was chatting with the seller and turns out she and her husband restore older homes and this fixture came out of a recent pre-war one they were working on -- one of my goals in our own pre-war apartment is to add some of the original charm back into the space and this fixture hits the mark being from that same era.

Anyone who has shopped for lighting knows how (ridiculously) expensive they can be and I think I got quite lucky with finding this fixture. Just the day before, I was contemplating this version from the Home Depot, which is still somewhat pricey and still looks "new" to me -- nothing beats the soul, especially in older homes, of vintage fixtures. I mean, just take a look at the perfectly worn in brass! Love, love, love.

The next light fixture in our apartment to be replaced was the one in our Kitchen: an exposed light bulb with a horrible glass shade. This room is small and doesn't get a lot of sunlight, and between the exposed bulb, not much natural light and high gloss paint on the walls, it was like being in a fun-house... and I wasn't having much fun.

This is what I was working with...

Remember the fixture I replaced in the living room? This fixture is the exact same one and is now going to join its ugly friend. But before installing, I headed to Lowes and picked up the same medallion as the one I used in the Living Room but once size larger (consistency is a great visual trick for the flow of a space).

After the fixture was installed, it looks like it had always been there. And I must say, it gives off a much nicer light which is crucial especially in a kitchen.

This was a very easy and inexpensive project that makes a huge difference in the look and feel of our Kitchen. I'm still working on a post to show you what's happening in the rest of the space!

Over the weekend I found this copper strainer for $1.00 -- I love its beat-up warmth and thought it'd be a great accessory in my kitchen (it's functional too as our old one is so outta here!).

The next day I had dinner with a client and her family and before leaving, I was handed a selection of their farm-fresh eggs. Talk about an unexpected surprise, I couldn't be more excited about the variation of sizes and colors and nothing beats the freshness of local produce. I thought my new thrifty find would be a perfect vessel to hold them.

Thanks to Meika and Joe (and their chickens!) of Central Lay'n Farms in Winters, California for the beautiful eggs.

farmhouse project, a new series!

I bet you're like me; you see a dumpster parked outside a neighbors house and you instantly want to know what's going on, especially if the neighbors have just bought the house and even more so if the home is one of the most historic in town.... am I right? I bet you're thinking "Oh, pleaasseee let me in!" Well, nosy-neighbors of the world, your wait is over because I'm doing just that, I'm letting you in on a client's renovation project!

I've recently started working with a darling couple, Nick and Emarie (she's one of the lovely ladies of The Collection in Sonoma, California) who've just purchased their very first home in Winters, California (which is about an hour East of San Francisco).

Growing up in Winters, Emarie had admired this house since she was eight years old, hoping one day she could call it her own. Fast forward 20+ years later and the home went up for sale. Remaining vacant for a number of years, the property fell into a state of disrepair and was in serious need of an update.

Nick and Emarie have already done the hard part of ripping out walls, gutting the kitchen, removing the 1950's pink bathroom, re-finishing the floors, adding new paint, salvaging 1900's wallpaper and a 1930's light fixture, restoring a turn of the century built-in hutch... whew!... in a nutshell, bringing life back into this house.

And that's where I come in -- yesterday I showed how I quickly styled the front porch and... new series!... twice a month, I'll be showing how I help this couple turn their beautiful new shell into a stunning, family friendly and welcoming home.

We'll be picking paint colors, installing new lighting, re-purposing existing furniture, purchasing new pieces and styling their existing items... so won't you join us on this Farmhouse Project?

pumpkin pickin'

Using pumpkins and gourds are the easiest way to decorate for Fall -- simply stack a few on your porch and you're ready for the season (they'll last way past Thanksgiving!). Last week I took a trip to the pumpkin patch in search of some pumpkins to quickly dress up a client's front porch of her newly purchased 1870's Farmhouse in Northern California (remember the Fairytale pumpkin I brought back for myself?)

Watch as I take a spin through the fields in search of just the right ones...

Once back, I stacked them on either side of the steps to flank the doorway. Here's a tip; gather the fallen leaves on the lawn to fill in the gaps between the pumpkins and to make the vignette look more natural. We're still looking for some urns -- wouldn't a black metal one filled with mums look great?

simple things, part two

I was late to the pumpkin patch this year and couldn't seem to find the perfect orange pumpkin. After chatting with the farmers about certain varieties, I learned the green eventually does turns orange! It's a matter of finding the shape/size you like and then just waiting.

Two Sundays ago I took a trip to the Alameda Flea Market in hopes of finding some large, statement-making pieces to fill our very barren apartment... the woes of moving into a much larger space perhaps?

We were on the last row at the end of the day when I spotted this large (check) and statement-making (check, check) piece of art and I was instantly drawn to the simplicity and modernness of it (a black and white photograph of a rose printed on blueprint). After talking the dealer down from $95 to $65, this gem was all mine! Now I know what you're thinking, $65 isn't exactly "thrifty," but I believe sometimes you have to spend a little more to get a little more -- this piece is 2.5' by 3.5' and it's a start to filling up some of our empty wall space.

After a good Windex-bath, I decided to prop it on top of another Alameda find (a stripped metal vintage school desk) in our Dining Room as part of a makeshift bar.

Bars are some of my favorite vignettes to style -- a collection of pretty bottles, decanters and glasses always look so elegant, and who doesn't like having easy access to an early evening cocktail? Remember this bar I styled for Rue Magazine?

Now you'll be happy to know that everything else in my bar setup was, in fact, thrifted. These Chech cut glass fluted beauties were a whooping $2.50 a piece (15 for the set) and are one of my favorite recent finds. Can't you just see them served with some St Germain, a splash of seltzer and sprig of lemon peel? The vintage metal tray was a whole $4.00, the glass decanter was $1.00 at the Salvation Army and the martini shaker was just a few dollars.

The blooms were lovingly picked by my Sweetie on a walk he took yesterday with his 2nd Grade class (que the awwwww's) and may be the last of the season, they're wilting by the minute!

Now that our bar is set to go and the styling is done, I may just need a drink. Who's with me!?

apartment project -- kitchen inspiration

Now that our Living Room and Dining Room are at a point where they're both live-able (only a few small projects remain), I'm moving on to our Kitchen. Our Kitchen is a mix between 1930's original detailing and 1970's updates, in other words, it has potential but definitely has its fair share of quirks and challenges. As a rental apartment, I don't have the option of ripping out and starting fresh. But it's nothing fresh paint and some strategic styling can't fix! And actually, I get excited over the challenges of these limitations... any one else hear what I'm sayin'?

While browsing for some inspiration, I came across the kitchen of Michael Penney. I've used his previous kitchen as inspiration in the past and I love that he's all about re-purposing and re-using what already exists. In his rental apartment, he showed how a few changes can transform a space, and now in his new home, he's upgraded the room while staying true to the era of the house. These are ideas that anyone can apply to their own space, being a renter or not.

I look forward to the first Sunday of every month -- waking up hours before the sun, running around with the other crazies and shopping until I'm numb. Why, it's the Alameda Flea Market! And boy did I shop. My legs are throbbing, my wallet is emptied and I'm giddy as a school girl over my purchases.

These past few weeks I've done my fair share of peering into my neighbor's homes -- two weekend ago we attended Sacramento's Historic Home Tour, and this past weekend it was all about gorgeous remodels in the East Sac Remodeling Tour.

While the Historic Home Tour was more about homes with an historical importance, the East Sac Remodeling Tour was much more a 'decorating' tour chock full of ideas and inspiration that any one can easily try in their own homes...

--> Inspiration #1: Mix and match
In this dining room, a quirky piece of artwork is placed upon a glamorous mirrored piece of furniture, while the heavy wood paneling is juxtaposed with a lively damask wallpaper.

--> Inspiration #2: Little details can add a big impact

In the same dining room, the insets of the coffered ceilings are highlighted with gold paint giving even more sparkle to this already stunning architectural element.

--> Inspiration #3: Let the floors sing

The walls and trim in this converted basement were kept in neutral shades of creams and whites while the painted copper-colored cement floor was the show stopper of the room. Dirt? Dust? Scuffs? They just disappear!

--> Inspiration #4: Create intimate seating areas

The home owners took advantage of the nook under their stairwell and turned it into a casual seating area for two. Sometimes all you need is a rug, some chairs, and a few accessories to utilize a forgotten space.

--> Inspiration #5: Display everyday objects as art

Un-used rakes, shovels and brooms are stored upright in pipes which were cemented in the ground. When not in use, these pieces stand alert and act as modern sculptures. (FYI: The home owner said he added a few golf balls to each pipe to keep the tools standing at the appropriate height)

--> Inspiration #6: Make the bed a focal point
Whether it's adding interest with colorful throw pillows and blankets or by using bedding with a tone-on-tone pattern, make the bed a luxurious main feature in the bedroom.

--> Inspiration #7: Add a bit of soul

There's nothing that gives a home more character, hence soul, than pieces with a little wear-and-tear, especially if you've just remodeled and everything is brand new. The homeowner added brass fixtures throughout the house and let them patina naturally over time.

--> Inspiration #8: Bring the inside out

Increase the visual flow of your living area and treat your outdoors as a continuation of your living room. Pink in the sun room? Then add the same pink outside! Same goes for the furniture; the homeowner used the exact same color and scale but in a different combinations.

I had a random selection of crazy vintage clothing,
the photographer had a crazy stack of wooden crates,
so we decided to shoot...

This vintage Oscar De La Renta Dress was one of my greatest thrifting finds. It was black velvet with a gigantic white bow.

Soon after, it got a much needed close up in a portrait series seen HERE.

This model was just a 'new face' at the time, but after we shot she went on to be an extremely sought after talent; appearing in editorials for Vogue, becoming the face for major campaigns and walking in top fashion shows.

I'm starting something new with 'Thrifting Thursday's' -- I'll still be showing some of the great items I find with thrifting, but I'll take in a step further and show how I style these items once I get them home.

Because really, there's nothing better then to see what people actually do with their thrifting treasures, wouldn't you agree?

I tried it out last week and you all seemed to like it, so here it goes...

A few weeks ago I was browsing my local Goodwill and found this darling little table (tweeted HERE) nestled between an unfortunate chair and another unfortunate dresser (are thrift stores where ugly furniture goes to die??). I'm a sucker for white marble so at $14.99 it didn't take much convincing before I snatched it up. But in my uber-thriftyness, I did try and talk them down but alas no such luck.

The wooden legs were really beat up and weren't worth saving -- they made the white marble seem dingy and needed to be freshened up with a coat of paint.

When I got home I removed the legs and slathered all the wooden pieces with a two coats of Kilz 2 Primer. This stuff is the best, ie: no sanding! I just wiped it down and started painting.

Then it was time for the fun part of deciding what color. I looked through the cans of paint I had left over from other projects and settled on Martha Stewart's Heavy Goose (a pale blue-gray).

Lastly, I added small felt pads from The Home Depot to the bottom of the feet and was ready to style 'er up!

I wanted to juxtapose the elegant marble and curved detailing with something hearty; in came a few antlers (found courtesy of this little dog) and a vintage wooden bowl. What is it about white marble that just gets me? I think because it's a combination of vintage and modern, and truly one of the classics!

It's a pretty simple project but just shows how a quick coat of paint and a few accessories can change the whole feel of a piece.

historic home tour, part two

This past weekend I attended the S acramento Old City Association's 36th Annual Historic Home Tour. Eight historic homes in the midtown Sacramento area were on show, from turn of the Century Victorian Mansions to mid-1920's Craftsmen Bungalows. Most of these home had been remodeled with much of their historic charm kept in tack or restored.

All the little details in these beautiful homes were making me giddy with excitement; weathered brass fixtures, original lighting, kooky exterior paint combinations, old family portraits, gorgeous woodwork and art nouveau stained glass.

After coming home, it dawned on me that our art deco apartment has similar charm, which made me even more giddy!

Yesterday the Sacramento Old City Association held it's 36th Annual Historic Home Tour which celebrated the historic neighborhood of 'Marshall School'.

Vintage cars lined the streets and people donned old-timey ensembles. If you hadn't known what year it was, you may have guessed 1930...

The homes on the tour were filled with original deco lighting, grand entryways and staircases, tarnished brass hardware (swoon!), farmhouse sinks and lots of inlaid hardwood floors... stay tuned!

thrifting thursday's

I've been toying with the idea of using National Geographic Magazines as props after seeing this console in the Hampton Designer Showhouse by Tilton Fenwick. While this apartment on Apartment Therapy also caught my eye.

I've always loved that bright yellow color and using something utilitarian in bulk, but National Geographics are something people are always trying to get rid of, right? Not something they're trying to accumulate!

So when I saw a stack of them for $0.25 each while thrifting over the weekend (tweeted about HERE), it took me a couple minutes of thinking "do I really need these?" before deciding to snatch up a pile. For $4.50 (18 magazines), I figured it was inexpensive enough to experiment with this trend.

I got home and started stacking them on our mantle. I immediately loved the yellow against the green of the succulents (recently potted here!) and how the bright yellow plays off the tarnished silver and the black, grays and bits of yellow in the painting.

What do you think? Have you experimented with this trend yet?

In honor of New York Fashion Week, here's a look at one of my favorite yet un-edited fashion shoots that was styled by Me and shot by Andrew De Francesco.

The inspiration? The 1920's and the Great Depression.
The location? The historic Grasmere Estate in Rhinebeck, New York.

Since we're friends with the Estate's owner, we were allowed into unseen rooms that had antique peeling wallpaper, tiny maids quarters and, perhaps, even a ghost...

A few months after we shot here, Domino Magazine took over the entire property to shoot a week long fashion story.

And later on, Chelsea Clinton held her rehearsal dinner on the grounds.

It's a truly fashionable house, indeed.

apartment project -- lighting upgrade, part two

Last week I shared our lighting conundrum by the front door. The previous very dated, landlord-chosen sconce needed an update pronto! I explored some options but unfortunately the $100 price tags on each of my choices meant I needed to find something more budget friendly (remember I'm working on an entire apartment rather than once specific space). Over the long weekend, I was able to finish said project.

Here's a reminder of what I was working with...

To achieve a designer look, I decided a little DIY was in order meanwhile keeping few specifics in mind...

1) I was looking for something that worked with our newly painted front door (in Behr Ultra Intellectual in semi-gloss) so anything too dark was a no-go because I didn't want it to compete with the dark gray.

2) I was looking for something that coordinated with the worn-in vintage brass front door knob, locks and switches (how much do you love these vintage switches???). Most likely the original sconce in the 1930's had a brass finish.

3) And lastly, I was looking for something that stayed true to the era of the architecture. The apartment is a pre-war so I was trying to find something on the traditional and classic side.

After exploring the lighting sections of our local home improvement stores, I finally settled on this option from The Home Depot (although I must say, the lighting department at Lowe's is stellar!). And just my luck, it was on sale for $26.00! But yes, it has a silver finish and I was looking for brass. So I got out the Rub-n-Buff in Antique Gold left over from my frame project and started rubbing and buffing away.

Tip: Use a Q-tip to get the pigment into the hard to reach areas (I used my fingers for everything else).

This stuff works miracles and it's something I always have on hand. I like it better than spray paint for projects like this because it's not as messy and touch-ups are a breeze. Look at all the colors! The possibilities are endless. I've only used the Antique Gold but am thinking of picking up the Gold Leaf soon.

The most important thing for me was to make sure this new fixture looked original as if it had been here since the 1930's and I didn't want it to look like we just installed a new, store bought sconce. So we started thinking of more ways to make this light fixture believable and decided to give the sconce more "oomph" and bought this 10" medallion from Lowe's for $8.00. I painted it the same semi-gloss white as the trim and adhered it to the wall with super glue (although there are probably better ways but this was all we had on hand! After it dried it wasn't all the way flush to the wall, so I used some caulk to fill in the gaps).

Once we saw everything installed there was something a bit off with the medallion painted white. It seemed a bit too bright and obvious that we were the ones who put it up (vs. it having already been there since the 1930's).

So I painted it the same gray as the walls and it fixed the problem making it less garish. And voila! Here's everything finished and looking great if I do say so myself!

The medallion gives some structure and presence to the sconce but doesn't overpower it or compete with the adjacent door, trim and hardware. It also anchors the fixture so it doesn't look like it's floating on the wall. The new brass finish ties in with all the other brass hardware and it doesn't clash with the door. But most importantly, it doesn't scream "I'm new!"

This was such a simple project but really adds a sense of drama to the entry of our apartment. And the whole project cost around $40! It's hard to imagine that less than two months ago this is what the front door looked like a few days after we moved in...

Continuing on with upgrades in our new apartment, changing out the lighting by the front door was next on the list. Although, let's be clear, this cheap-o sconce was never intended to stay! (Side note: Why do landlords install the ugliest fixtures? I've seen this exact fixture at [insert large home improvement store here] and there are other options! My Honey tells me that most people don't care. I find that VERY hard to believe!)

Anyway, the 1980's scalloped glass and gaudy silver finish had to go....

But what do I replace it with? I headed over (virtually) to one of my favorite spots for period lighting, Rejuvenation, where I could browse light fixtures by year. I put in 1930-1939 and up popped an array of delicious options...

Of course deliciousness also comes with a price, but I wanted to get an idea of fixtures that may have originally been in the space and then see if I could find something similar while staying within my budget.

So what did I choose? There's something in the works and hopefully with this long Holiday weekend it'll be ready to show you next week... stay tuned!

Every page is filled with beautiful homes, step-by-step guides, instructions and inspirational quotes including this one which really hit home with me:

I'll be the first to admit, I'm impatient and want everything to be done N-O-W. Sitting down with this book has given me an excuse to, possibly, relax a bit!

I had a chance to meet Holly in the flesh last week at her book signing in San Francisco. While we were chatting (aka listening to me blabble... she's so sweet!), I made sure to relay all the wonderful comments I received over the past few weeks about my interview and how we'd all love to see more interviews! More, more! Give us more! :)

This past Saturday my Boyfriend and I set out on one of our favorite weekend activities; thrifting! It was one of those 'epic' thrifting days where I swear these things find me. You know what I mean, we all have them but they only come around once in awhile, right? I tried tweeting about all the goodies I was finding, but something wasn't working. Thankfully I brought my trusty camera and decieded to share a few of the treasurese we found that day...

+ One of my favorite finds ever, an adorable needlepoint lid with a brass rim for $0.50! I know! I'm going to hang it amongst a gallery wall we're planning for the hallway. I love mixing in other elements with the frames and think this could be a great addition.

+ I spotted this gold and white porcelain mid-century lamp with a silver metal detail. It was either $5.00 or $7.00 which is a great deal for a vintage lamp. It came with a shade but I took that off for the photo and would replace it with a new one, maybe with a natural linen drum shade? Reminds me of something she'd might use.

+ I love the bright colors of these vintage plates. How fun would they be to bring out at your next picnic or backyard BBQ? I think it was $5.00 for a set of six.

+ There was an entire six piece set of this green tableware including a pitcher and a cake cover. I think it's so cute that the store set it all up and mixed in some other green pieces. Thrift-store styling at its best!

+ I've been loving grand, wooden pianos ever since seeing this one in Keri Russell's home in Elle Decor. How amazing would this piece be painted a cream and then roughed up a bit? It would make all the beautiful carvings pop. It did need some work and for $250 it was a little too much for us, so we left it for another lucky shopper to find.

+ A cute set of lunch napkins and place mats in a burnt-orange color with white grape leaves for $3.00. These prices are crazy!

+ Two chairs in need of some love, the pink one would be awesome painted and reupholstered (or perhaps left that way for an Anthro vibe???). The wooden one had some whimsical painted designs but was damaged and I couldn't figure out how to repair it (similar to this one in an entry of a stylist's home). Although for $20.00 and $7.00 I probably should have just bought them both and figured it out later...

+ A perfect tarnished silver leaf dish to add to my growing collection of worn-in silver. I'm thinking of hanging a few on the wall in our dining room.

+ A set of six vintage 'Bloody Mary' tumblers for $1.00 each and a darling oval frame for $1.00. I'm planning to spray the frame black (or maybe Rub-n-Buff it) and add it to our gallery wall. I'm loving oval frames these days!

+ I'm not sure what this is, but it has knotty embroidery on great natural linen, two things I love. For $1.00 I couldn't pass it up and will keep it to frame as art.

apartment project -- choosing color

After slathering the Living Room woodwork and trim with a shinny dose of white paint, it was time to finalize a color for the walls. I knew that I wanted to stay true to the era of the space (a pre-war) with a shade of gray, yet something warm and not too dark but with enough contrast to make all the new white pop... because in my opinion, if you have the charm, play it up! (The architectural kind, that is :)

In pursuit of the perfect shade, I taped up 50 different paint chips, hemmed and hawed, bought a few different samples and tested swatches in different lighting (daylight, shade, evening, tungsten etc etc). So what color did we choose? Drum roll please.... we decided to go with Benjamin Moore's Edgecomb Gray HC-173!

Here are a few snaps before our furniture was moved in...

Look at how the white pops! It's a beautiful color and one I would absolutely recommend to try, constantly changing tonalities (as you can see above) and a perfect example of how Benjamin Moore knocks it out of the park with their grays. And who knew? Edgecomb Gray, as I just found, is a popular shade among other design enthusiasts...

One rule I like to stick by when choosing color, especially in older homes where each room is divided (vs an open living plan) is to use the same color story throughout. I don't believe dark colors make a space feel small, but I do believe that contrast does, ie: adjacent rooms with contrasting colors break up the space and therefore make the entire space feel smaller.

So to make our space feel larger, I'll also be painting the adjacent Dining Room the same gray color to visually create one cohesive living space rather than two distinct spaces.

How do you choose color?

PS: Since these photos were taken, a few changes have already been made including the front door and a new light fixture...

A few years ago, the New York Times ran a series which paired Interior Designers with real life Clients having budgets ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 (each Designer agreed to waive their fee). The series outlined the process starting from a problematic space to completed room based on the needs and budget of the specific Client.

They showed before and after photos and included a list of purchased items, but the most genius part about this series were all the interactive aspects - you could click on items in the room to hear audio comments and interviews from each respective Designer and Client. It was a stunning mix of modern technology with design and a wonderful way to get inside the Designer's heads and to see some of the triumphs and challenges that relate to real life projects. Even after two years this series has stuck with me and I have yet to see something similar. Does anyone else remember this series?

apartment project -- a living room peek

We're in, we're in! After what felt like months, we finally got the keys on Friday and immediately spent the weekend getting to work. We decided to start from the front of the apartment and work our way back - it's a huge space and this was our way of not getting overwhelmed. First up? The Living Room...

The apartment hasn't had a decent painting job (or one at all) in years and the big, beautiful mouldings, trim, doors and fireplace were crying out for shinny white paint. We used Behr's Decorator White in a semi-gloss and wow, what a difference paint makes! Even without color on the walls (besides the disgusting builder grade off-white) the room already feels crisp and clean.

In a few days, we've already...
--> painted the baseboards
--> painted the crown mouldings
--> painted the fireplace and hearth
--> replaced all switch plates for new white ones (so they blend into the moulding)
--> cleaned the metal heat grills
--> started to paint the ceiling and the front door

Whew! Today's agenda is to finish painting the ceiling and the front door and to work on the three windows...

Meanwhile, I'm still searching for the perfect shade of warm gray, nothing too dark, yet something with enough contrast to showcase all the new white trim. Any suggestions?

PS: The paint job may seem a bit messy because we're using the paint to really get in there and "seal" the cracks between the moulding and walls, you know how old houses tend to settle and separate? Thankfully I have a steady hand for cutting in... the mess will be covered once we decide on a wall color. Stay tuned!

wax on, wax off

I found this botanical leaf print while thrifting this week for a whopping $3.50. It was professionally framed and all set to go, except I thought the bright gold frame was too harsh against the vintage look of the print and tan mat.

So I brought out one of my new favorite finds that i picked up at Michael's called Rub-n-Buff. It's a wax pigment that you rub on with your fingers (or a cloth) to create a metallic finish on just about any surface. I used the Antique Gold version.

Voila! The wax made the frame less garish and toned the gold down to compliment the art. Simple and easy and now I have a new piece of art for less than $5.00!

Tip: I found the wax covers more thoroughly when done in thin layers; rub on, let dry, buff and repeat until you've reached the desired coverage.

new digs, new outlook

After a long hunt, we finally found the perfect apartment.
We applied.
We worried.
And we waited for what felt like weeks.
We were nervous wrecks with fingernails chewed and stomachs in knots.

And then we got it!
We are, in a word, ecstatic.

Located in the Fabulous 40's in Sacramento, the apartment is a two bedroom (hello, office! studio!) with hardwood floors, a fireplace, built-ins with art deco glass doors, tons of windows and natural light, tons of storage, and a washer and dryer (!!!)... but most of all, it feels like home.

I've already been decorating the place in my mind. I have paint colors picked out and furniture arranged...

This is the first post of many to come following our new life in this beautiful space.
I tried documenting our apartment upgrades a while back, but truthfully, my current apartment is so uninspiring, and for a stylist, it's been a creative weight.

I'm, again, flattered the image they chose to run was a spread from our 'Farmstead Restoration' shoot.

Perhaps I should let everyone in on a little secret...
The home is my parent's home and the home I grew up in,
the girl in the photo is my beautiful sister,
and the little dog is our adorable Westie named Tessa.

Not only am I flattered that a story I styled and art directed caught the attention of so many,
but also a story that is so personal and familiar to me.

floral upgrade

With Springtime fast approaching, I find myself lingering just a bit longer in the flower section of the grocery store, wanting to bring home some color and freshness after months of gloom and rain.

I always break up a store-bought arrangement, either into separate, smaller arrangements or into a more stylized, larger one. A stylist trick perhaps? Or maybe just being resourceful?

Look at the transformation from these store-bought flowers into beautiful bouquets, genius!

I took my own advice and did this recently to a bouquet brought home from my sweetie after he ran out for some milk. I pulled out the best blooms and spread the wealth into two separate vessels...

we shot at a beautiful 18th century estate in Rhinebeck, NY, and staying true to the Dutch history of the area, we based the concept around the Dutch Still Life oil paintings, the light of Vermeer and the Warmth of Winter.

a resolution to be art-filled

One of my New Year's resolutions is a simple one: to get some art work up on my walls.

I have many empty frames, but nothing in which to fill their void.

But thanks to THIS website, it may be one resolution quickly checked off my list. It turns any photo into a vintage-looking, sepia-toned image along with scratches and watermarks. All you do is upload an image and hit "Generate" and voila!

Don't you just love it? It's like magic! I put it to the test and created a series of images for a very special Christmas present...

Finished with a simple white frame and mat, it brings modernity to the old-worldliness of the art, and if I may say so myself, looks terribly expensive and chic. Too bad i already gave this piece away!

It's quick, simple and easy DIY art.

With all the snow I've been hearing about back East, it makes me remember one particular morning...

Clumps of snow were falling off roofs and trees.

The morning light was soft and illuminating.

Red berries and barns were showing through the white dusting.

And canine friends were intrigued by their new glistening playground.

One of my favorite things to do in the winter months is to force spring-time blooms for indoor beauty.

Watching Paper Whites and Amaryllis bulbs pop-up and flower during cold, dark days just makes me happy.

I've recently been working with a local shop in Northern, CA as their stylist, and I thought how lovely it would be to create a "bulb" table chock full of forced bulbs, a selection of loose bulbs, and many many pot and container options.

So I got to work forcing Paper Whites in galvanized containers, mercury glass, and stone pots. I forced Amaryllis bulbs in creamy white urns, and I made up little bundles of loose bulbs in cellophane bags.

Bring on the colder months!

the leaves are falling,
the weather is changing,
and autumnal celebrations are in full swing.

i created these centerpieces for a local school's annual Back To School Night,
they're simple, a bit nostalgic, very easy to make and inexpensive!

> first, i coated the insides of ball jars with white paint...
- mix a bit of water with the paint to thin it out and make it easier to coat the glass. place the jar upside down on a paper towel, wiping off the excess paint from the rim every few hours until the paint dries.
- you can find these jars for pennies at thrift stores, but we bought a set of 12 for about $10 at Target.

> then i hot-glued a strip of satin ribbon around the base of the jar, hiding the seam with a paper leaf punched from a leaf craft punch that i found at Michael's.

> i filled the jar using what was left of the summer blooms and filled in with some eucalyptus sprigs. i love the "floppy" look especially for a casual centerpiece like this one.

> scattered around the table are more punched and hand cut leaves. a bundle of freshly sharpened pencils tied with some yarn finish this sweet display!

{the guests were asked to write blessings for the school on the paper leaves. the leaves will be saved for a future event in the Spring where they'll be strung together and hung onto branches of the trees}

renting woes

An old Domino quote "renters need not be second class citizens"

pops into my head quite often, being that I'm a renter.

I'm always fascinated and inspired when I come across

those who are still able to turn their rented spaces into

beautiful, home-owner-like living quarters.

Usually what can and cannot be done to a rented space is limited to

rules of the building, rules of the landlord,

and many times, a tight budget (or else we would buy, right?)

I came across a few videos from the very lovely

Canadian publication, House and Home, that I wanted to share...

late summer

I've been MIA from the blogging-world.

Between moving to CA,
then moving again (long story),
navigating a new market/territory/coast,
making new friends,

making new contacts,

and oh yeah, trying to find a paying job,

this little blog had been put on the (way) back burner.

So to make up for months of absent posts, here's a late-summer arrangement I just did to commensurate a local school's opening day and their newly constructed campus.

I was given only a one day notice and a $40 budget! Therefore the challenge of the project became to "use what was available," and this is what I did for a quick and easy display...

First, before I spent any money, I walked around the campus and gathered fallen branches, pine cones, leaves, sprigs of berries and dried foliage. I poked into sheds and classrooms to look for props, baskets, boxes and a can of gold spray paint. Then I stacked some of the eye-sore hay bales into a cluster of three.

Now it was time to go shopping...

I bought an inexpensive black urn for $20.00 from Wal-Mart (and no, I'm not usually a fan of cheap mass retailers but did you see my budget?). I love the look of black against all the orange, yellows and browns with the pops of gold. Then I bought three bunches of yellow autumnal silk flowers for $12.00 from Michael's (I don't usually support fakes of any kind, however there's not much available during this time of year and I needed fillers and autumnal color).

When I got back, I sat the urn at a slight angle on top of the highest hay bale, placed a large rock on the bottom and then filled it with wood chips. After laying out all my clippings, I got to work on creating the arrangement (tip: this may require a few more hands!). I started with the branches, then added the sprigs of berries, then filled in with the yellow fakes. I hit the tops of the dried thistle with a quick spray of gold paint and added a few to the arrangement.

I piled pine cones, dried pods, and more golden thistle-heads around the base of the urn and to "empty spots" on the hay bales. then and I scattered some dried eucalyptus leaves onto the arrangement and around the pine cones to make it look less perfect and more natural. Lastly, a few inexpensive mums in apple baskets fill in the bare corners and add another pop off color.

There! Done and done! Super fast, easy and inexpensive!

+ A cup and saucer to sip morning coffee.
+ A canary yellow plastic tissue box to brighten up a bathroom.
+ A starburst bowl for holding jewelry on a bedside table.
+ A blue flowery plate as instant art to a kitchen wall.

Images of my installation and jewelry
from the last Art At Grasmere,
... which is an annual art show held at the
historic Hudson Valley estate of Grasmere.

I was lucky enough to have an entire nook (painted lime green!)
in which to show my on-hand collection of jewels.

The peonies were in full bloom so I mimicked
their shape with paper bells that I cut in half
and taped to the walls, creating groupings and
overlapping the antique frames.

And I couldn't love all the 18th century detailing more!

a 100 times over

morning lilacs

The lilacs are already past their prime

and have turned into sad wilting buds.

But a few weekends ago

they were all a-bloom

in their perfumed glory...

Don't you just love that scent?

I knew I had to get them in the house before

their blooming season ends....

So I picked an assortment of purple and white

to make a bouquet in one of my

newest vintage vases.

And putting the bouquet right above my bed,

I had dreams of lilac-y goodness.

Scenes from an estate sale.

It was pouring down rain
and a bit eery.

Like walking back in to an
early 70's time warp.

Every drawer, closet, cupboard and corner
were filled with vintage finds.

As if the owner had just stepped out.

Hand written notes still left on the desk,
cookies remaining in jars on the kitchen counters,
everything neatly folded and put away.

I started watching Mad Men after I did a shoot with

one of the shows cast members Elisabeth Moss...

Doesn't she look lovely in this Julian Louie frock and Telesca earrings?

Everyone on set kept talking about how great the show was,

how amazing the wardrobe, the makeup, the writing...

So when I got home I promptly downloaded the

first season and have been hooked ever since.

Well actually, obsessed is more like it!

Oh those Victorians!
They would mourn for a year,
wear tons of black,
and lots of intricate jewelry...
sounds like some New Yorkers I know!

Little Victorian black jet buttons
and sparkly vintage gold chain
create modern mourning jewelry
for the modern gal,
otherwise know as the
Lady Victorian Bracelet.

A few are waiting to go into the New York shops,
but they just may dangle on my wrist a couple days more...

This past thrifting adventure was quite the vintage overhaul. There was something special every where i looked and on every single shelf.

I was vintage-overwhelmed (but loving it!)

When paying for all these finds, I told the shopgirl that "some little old lady must have just died"... but she didn't get the joke.

One particular great find was this collection of 1950's - 60's StarGlow Dinnerware which included...

2 serving plates

1 dinner plate

1 cake plate

4 dessert plates

6 saucers

And although the set isn't complete, I'll mix and match the pieces with sets that I already have.

We showed you how to throw an easy and inexpensive fiesta style party...

Like using strands of paper garlands for simple decorating...

Or mixing up a refreshing limeade.

> Limeade Recipe <

Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
2 cups white sugar
ice cubes as desired

preparation:
1. simple syrup: combine the sugar and water in a saucepan and heat until barely boiling.
2. remove from heat and cool. combine 1 cup syrup and 1 cup lime juice in a pitcher.
3. add enough water to make up a half gallon. serve over ice.

note: while this limeade is very refreshing, it tends to get bitter if left out for too long. it should be consumed on the same day it's made.

Serves: 5
